King Street Bridge

Summary

WALT: Write a summary about our Reading Journals.

King Street Bridge

By Hinemoana Baker

This article is about a girl named Hera getting bullied by two girls named Lyza and Rebecca.

  • Lyza and Rebecca bullied Hera just because she was Maori.
  • Hera has a friend named Jules.

On King Street Bridge, Hera had lost her lunch to an Eel, so she was feeling pretty dizzy on her way to School today. Hera walked to School with Jules, and when they got there, Jules gave her a greenstone taonga to keep for a while.

After School was finished, Hera was going home now, again crossing the King Street Bridge. As she was walking, she could see Lyza and Rebecca, the two bullies, waiting for her at the bridge. Hera was about to approach them, but Hera was feeling a bit dizzy again. Lyza and Rebecca were calling her names and mocking her. When Hera got closer. She fainted…

When Hera fainted.. Lyza and Rebecca were very worried, they thought she had died.

After that happened, Hera told Jules everything. Lyza and Rebecca walked past them, Lyza said “Hi, Hera” and Hera smiled. Lyza and Rebecca were so scared, they didn’t want to bully her again.

This is Hera waking up from when she fainted.

Keep your Cat inside

Title: Keep Your Cat Inside
Author: Mike Tapp
WALT: Summarise stories for our Reciprocal Reading.

This article is about pet cats escaping from the house, and eating other animals and invertebrates like Mice, Birds, Insects and Geckos. Scientists put Kittycam’s on some Cats to see where they go at night while their owners are sleeping. The Scientists also found out that they eat NZ native birds and insects, like Weta’s.

Scientists have to cut open stray Cats just to find out what they ate, or they either wait for the Cat droppings and they look very carefully for pieces of animals like Mice, but it is kind of difficult, because their is also Cat food in the droppings. It is kind of hard to find the Cat droppings, because they tend to hide it.

  • Study 1 result, Cats have killed: 314 mice, 267 birds, 183 skinks, 67 rats, 64 insects, 8 geckos, 3 rabbits and 1 stoat.
  • 43% of the animals that the pet Cats killed were native to New Zealand.
  • Pet Cats killed more birds, skinks, geckos and wetas than rats and mice.

Learning from the Christchurch Earthquake

During 2010, Christchurch had a 7.1 Richter Scale earthquake. The earthquake caused liquefaction. Dr Nicol say “The Christchurch experience teaches us that liquefaction might in some cases cause bigger problems for people than movement on the fault itself.”

The 2010 earthquake Richter scale was 7.1, but nobody died.

The second earthquake was on the 22nd of February 2011, this earthquake’s Richter scale was 6.3. Unlike the earthquake in 2010, this one was worst... 185 people were killed, mostly when multi-storied buildings collapsed.

Scientists are using Christchurch earthquakes as an example to learn from it, so they can warn people to make good choices about where they live.

The Vege Car

Today,  Davarni, Honey and I have been working together on a document. We had to write the Positive, Negative and Interesting (PMI), parts about the Vege Car, the MacDonald family have. There were more Negatives than Pluses. We also had to write a Post Card to our best friend, so that means we were pretending to be James Iti. (Click the image to enlarge)

All Blacks demolished France

Name of article that I read: All Blacks demolish France

Author: Shem Banbury

1. Who is the main person or group of people in this news article? The main people are the All Blacks (NZ), France, everyone who works with the All Blacks or France, and people who work at the stadium.

2. What was the key event from the news article? The key event is that the All Blacks (NZ) demolished France during the quarter finals.

3. Where did this event take place? This event took place at Wembley stadium in Cardiff.

4. When did this event take place? On the 17th of October (4 days ago) is when this event took place.

5. Why did this event happen? This event happened, because those two teams had got the highest points during the Rugby World Cup, so they got to play in the quarter-finals and it was very exciting, but it was also a nerve-racking game, because in 2007 the All Blacks and France had played together at the exact same place where they played in 2007. France won that game in 2007, so it was kind of a memory to them so I think that’s why the All Blacks tried their hardest to win, and I think that’s why we got a lot of tries and we WON! (62 - 13)

The Almost Rescue

For Reading me and my partner Davarni made a slideshow about "The Almost Rescue" book we read. Me and Davarni shared documents and made this slideshow. I found it difficult to find the right place to film our movie which we haven't finished but we worked really hard on it. I learnt a new and interesting story and I enjoyed it very much, and so did our Reading group.

McCaw Reaches Milestone

Author: Shem Banbury

1. Find a quote from the main person in this news article: I don’t believe in magic. I believe in hard work.
2. In your own words describe what happened in this news article: Richie McCaw was emotional because he has stepped off Eden Park to a standing ovation during the game between The All Blacks and the Wallabies. “ I’m probably not the kind of guy who gets emotional but there was a big lump in my throat. It’s hard to explain, but I didn't want to stop, that feeling, that moment. It’s a memory you’ll always have… even talking about it now, you feel a bit of a shiver down the spine” Richie said. The test was also the last in New Zealand.
3. Find out where this event took place and include some information about this place: This event took place in Eden Park and it’s where Richie McCaw stepped out of.
4. Tell us when this event happened and explain what might happen in the future: This event took place on 7/8/15. I think there will be a new captain for the All Blacks.
5. Explain in your own words why this event took place: It’s just that Richie McCaw is a really good player and he was able to reach another Milestone.

Journey through the stars

Our other story was about the reflection from the stars reflecting on the sea and the Author wrote a story about how the galaxy is infinite. It is especially amazing how the layout is made, it makes it seem like a wave like the sea.

Aliens Invade Earth Story

For our Reading task, we read about a Alien Invasion and it was about a messed up bathroom all set up for the Aliens. E.g: The toothpaste tube was squeezed out from the tube so they can suck from it, he left his towel on the floor so the Aliens have a safe landing through the window, left the tap running for the Aliens because it was a long trip from Arcturus. During this story me and my group learnt more about sentence layouts and structures, mostly about irony for this Reading task. I found it difficult explain the meanings of each word and to think about more of the insects and what they eat.
