Claire’s Secret Ambition

Claire’s mother worked in a local cinema. She showed people to their seat and sold ice-cream and popcorn. She loved watching the films and longed to meet all the film stars. But she knew that her dream would never come true.

So, when Claire was born, her mother decided that she would grow up to be a famous film star. She sent Claire to a Drama Academy where she had to learn acting, dancing, singing and mime. But Claire had a secret ambition. She knew that her mother longed for her to become a film star, so she was too scared to tell her that she didn’t want to be a film star at all. Claire’s secret ambition was to be a vet. Claire thought about being a vet all the time. While she was singing she thought about budgies with broken legs. While she was dancing she thought about horses with backache. But Claire told no one about her secret ambition.

One day Claire’s mother decided that it was time for Claire to try some real acting. They went to the film studios for an audition. Claire had to sing and dance and read a poem. Her mother thought she was wonderful, but Claire did not get the job. Soon Claire had been to more than sixty auditions. She hadn't got a job, but her mother was still hopeful. Once again they set off for the film studios. Perhaps it will be a big film with lots of stars, Claire’s mother thought. Perhaps it will be a film about vets, thought Claire. But the audition was not for a film at all. The director told them it was for a TV commercial. All she had to do was eat a sweet and read from a card.

‘Nutty Snaps are the nuttiest, ‘ Claire Read.

‘Fantastic!’ gasped her mother.

‘Super!’ sighed the director.

And that is how Claire became the Nutty Snap kid.

Claire’s Nutty Snap commercial was so successful that two new factories had to be built. The factory workers sent Claire twenty boxes of Nutty Snaps as a present. Soon people began to point and stare at Claire in the street. Her mother gave up her job at the cinema so that she could go with Claire to open supermarkets and sign autographs.

Claire’s mother was very happy. Claire liked Nuttysnaps but she hated being famous. One terrible day, Claire and her mother were invited to the Director’s office. ‘I’m afraid that I must find a new Nuttysnap kid,’ he said. ‘Claire has become too fat. We don’t want people to think that Nutty Snaps are fattening, do we?’ Claire’s mother was very upset, so the director said to send Claire to the Golden Carrot Health Farm to lose weight.

One morning, a fat man arrived with a fat cat in a basket. ‘I’m Mr Fasolini,’ he said. ‘And this is my cat, Clovis. ‘We’re both here to lose weight. In the afternoon while Mr Fasolini was having a sauna, Claire heard a terrible screech coming from the kitchen. She ran in to find Clovis with his tail caught in the cupboard door. She set him free and, seeing his tail was badly bent, she tied it up with a tea-towel and a wooden spoon. Claire told Mr Fasolini about the Drama Academy and her mother’s plan to make her into a film star. She talked more about the her secret ambition. ‘Ah Claire,’sighed Mr Fasolini,’ I understand. When I was a boy, everyone in my family was a sausage-maker. They wanted me to be a sausage-maker too, but I, also, had a secret ambition. I was determined to be a film maker. ‘And did you become a film director?’ asked Claire.

‘Yes! And I will help you to achieve your ambition too. In Fact I already have a plan!

After a few weeks, the film crew flew off to film in the desert. Claire went to stay with Mr Fasolini’s family. She liked the Fasolini's and she liked all their animals, especially Clovis.

But the best thing was Claire’s new school. No more acting! No more mime! She also didn't want to become a vet any more. Claire was more interested in the solar system, mostly the sun because it was so hot in the desert. So Claire wanted to be an astronaut! She had very good patients so she could wait up to 4 days to get to space. Mr Fasolini believed in Claire, but her mother was very worried about Claire going to space so guess what? Claire’s mother became a astronaut as well. After a few years Claire was finally a teenager, she was now 16 years old. And she was the first ever teenager in space. Since she was the first teenager in space, she became famous. After all, Claire liked being famous because she had all the attention and got a lot of money and her mum became a famous actor too.
